Rep. Dawn Hill
Pictured here in the chamber of the Maine House of Representatives, Dawn Hill is sworn in as a member of the 123rd Legislature. Governor Baldacci conducted the swearing in ceremony, making official the service of 151 elected State Representatives for their two year term 2007-2008.
Legislative Accomplishments
Hill was the prime sponsor of 16 legislative items, including sentiments, bills and a resolution. She co-sponsored over 160 legislative items. Of the bills that she was the primary sponsor of three became law significant to Maine's future.
Serving her Constituents
Maine boasts a "people's legislature" which means, that even when not in session you're continually working for your constituents. Pictured here at York's Senior Center, Dawn is listening to the concerns of one of her constituents. Maybe getting some friendly advice, too!

2008 Legislative Update and Message
Serving in the Maine Legislature is more than testifying before committees, making new laws and casting difficult votes. It's so much more. Through constant outreach, I have hoped to inform business leaders, educators, civic leaders, civic organizations, and Maine children and their families about the importance of public service, being involved regardless of what side of the issue and improving quality of life in Maine, locally and statewide. In 2007-2008, I was pleased to help enact laws that protected children & consumers, encouraged clean energy, safeguarded and improved our environment, curbed property taxes in Maine with a sweeping overhaul of the way Maine runs its jails and prison system, and improve business opportunities throughout the State.
Most important of all, I am honored to represent residents within my Legislative District and in a broader sense the State as a whole. Maine is a special place, with caring, hard working and dedicated people who despite differences share a common passion about their independence, position on issues and pride. They have educated me more than I can convey. I am proud to serve them and with determination will continue to be an independent voice for them. - Dawn Hill
Economy
Economy
Faced with an unexpected $190 million dollar shortfall, due to a sluggish Maine economy and lower than expected revenue(s), the 123rd Legislature was forced to make many difficult decisions to bring the state's budget into balance without increasing broad based taxes or dipping into the rainy day fund.

Education
Education
School Administrative Consolidation (SAC) was by far one of the hot topics during 2007-2008. Wrapped into the State budget, Governor Baldacci included the concept of administrative consolidation into his proposed two year budget proposal in 2007-2008. I supported the bi-partisan budget as did an overwhelming majority of Legislature.

Environment
Environment
Maine's environment, clean air, scenic vistas and pristine waters are perhaps its greatest asset, aside from its people. It is the combination of these essential, never to be duplicated natural factors that help define Maine's brand. It is because of this "natural brand" that tourism is essential to Maine's vitality. It's what sets LL Bean apart from other great retailers and makes Cabella want to position itself in Maine.

Consumer Protection/Animal Welfare
Fighting to protect Maine citizens from predatory lending and "equity stripping" of their homes via rogue loans was accomplished during the 123rd Legislature. I supported consumers' right to get cash refunds on most gift cards with a value of less that $5 dollars left and prevented pre-paid calling card providers from changing the value of the card after their purchase.

Healthcare
Healthcare
Healthcare remains one of the most frustrating policy issues at home in Maine and across the nation. Despite efforts to help sustain an alternative subsidized health plan in Maine, few new subscribers and high per person subsidies, point to the need for continued health care reform.
